Date of Decision: December 24, 2024

Registrant's Role: Pharmacist

Outcome: Removal from the register

GPhC Standards Breached: Standard 6: Pharmacists must behave professionally and be trustworthy. Standard 9: Pharmacists must demonstrate leadership by setting a good example.

Case Summary

The GPhC Fitness to Practise Committee reviewed the case of KF, a registered pharmacist, who was convicted at Sheffield Crown Court on 24 June 2022 for causing death by dangerous driving. The incident occurred during an overtaking manoeuvre, resulting in a head-on collision that caused the victim’s death.

The registrant failed to notify the GPhC of his conviction within the required 7-day period, which was deemed a breach of professional standards. Following his conviction, he received a 3-year custodial sentence, a driving ban, and other penalties.

The Committee initially imposed a 12-month suspension, noting his expressed remorse and testimonials supporting his professional competence. However, during the review hearing, the Committee found that his insight had regressed, as he continued to downplay his responsibility for the accident. The registrant had also not completed any of the recommended actions, such as providing evidence of remediation or professional testimonials.

The Committee determined that removal from the register was necessary to uphold public confidence in the profession and ensure proper professional standards.

The registrant is now removed from the register, with interim suspension measures in place during the appeal period.

Key Lessons:
This case emphasizes the importance of timely self-reporting of convictions, maintaining professional standards, and demonstrating genuine remediation and insight after serious incidents.
