Pharmacist Removed from Register Due to Serious Criminal Convictions

In a recent determination by the General Pharmaceutical Council’s Fitness to Practise Committee, a pharmacist was removed from the register following serious criminal convictions. The pharmacist was convicted of multiple counts of rape, indecent assault, and sexual assault, involving both minors and adults, over a period of more than 20 years. The offences were committed under the guise of religious practices, exploiting the trust of victims who were part of a prayer group led by the pharmacist.

The Committee found that the pharmacist’s fitness to practise was impaired due to these convictions, which were deemed fundamentally incompatible with being a registered professional. The pharmacist’s actions breached the fundamental principles of the pharmacy profession, particularly Standard 6, which requires professionals to behave in a manner that maintains trust and confidence in the profession.

The determination emphasized the need to protect the public and maintain public confidence in the pharmacy profession. The pharmacist’s conduct was described as one of the worst cases of sexual abuse to come before the courts, and the Committee concluded that removal from the register was the only appropriate sanction.
