Scamming Pharmacist Removed from Register Due to Fraud Convictions
Date of Decision: February 3, 2022
Registrant's Role: Pharmacist
Outcome: Removed
GPhC Standards Breached: Standard 6: Pharmacy professionals must behave in a professional manner, including acting with honesty and integrity.
Case Summary
In a recent determination by the General Pharmaceutical Council’s Fitness to Practise Committee, a pharmacist was removed from the register following convictions for multiple frauds. The case involved serious allegations of dishonesty, where the registrant extracted significant sums of money from individuals and companies under false pretenses.
Allegations:
The registrant faced three main allegations. Firstly, he committed fraud by convincing Person A to loan him £288,200 under the guise of business investments in America. Secondly, he falsely claimed to have cancer, extracting £127,150 from Person A for supposed treatment costs. Lastly, he fraudulently claimed £121,339.55 from Company A for non-existent business expenses related to a pharmaceutical warehouse.
Findings:
The Committee found all allegations proved by admission. The registrant’s actions were premeditated and involved a high degree of dishonesty, breaching the trust expected of pharmacy professionals.
GPhC Determination on Impairment:
The Committee determined that the registrant’s fitness to practise was impaired. His actions brought the profession into disrepute, breached fundamental principles of honesty and integrity, and demonstrated that his integrity could not be relied upon.
Sanction:
Given the severity of the frauds and the need to maintain public confidence in the profession, the Committee decided that removal from the register was the only appropriate sanction. The registrant’s actions were fundamentally incompatible with remaining on the register.
Learning Points for Pharmacy Professionals:
This case underscores the importance of maintaining honesty and integrity in all professional dealings. Pharmacy professionals must uphold the trust placed in them by the public and adhere to the standards set by the GPhC. Dishonest conduct, especially involving financial deceit, can lead to severe consequences, including removal from the professional register.
