The case centered on a registered pharmacy technician who was convicted of importing a significant quantity of a Class A drug—cocaine—into the UK. On 7 March 2025, the registrant was found guilty at Liverpool Crown Court of participating in the fraudulent evasion of a prohibition on importing cocaine, under section 170 of the Customs and Excise Management Act 1979. The registrant was later sentenced to 3 years and 9 months’ imprisonment on 20 June 2025. The drugs, approximately 22kg of high-purity cocaine, were discovered in luggage upon returning from a holiday in Jamaica. The total estimated street value was £594,000.
The registrant was alleged to have knowingly taken part in the smuggling operation. While she denied knowing about the contents of the suitcase, the jury found her guilty, and sentencing remarks indicated she had helped identify the luggage by tying ribbons and sending photos to aid their identification.
