Pharmacy Technician Suspension Expires After Theft of Aciclovir for Dating Website Man

Allegations
The registrant, a pharmacy technician with a long-standing career at a single pharmacy, was originally referred to the GPhC for serious misconduct. Between April 2007 and July 2014, she removed a prescription-only medicine, Aciclovir, from her place of employment and supplied it to a man she met through a dating website. Crucially, she did so without a valid prescription or permission from her employer. The conduct was found to be dishonest, as the registrant admitted to taking the medication under false pretenses and providing it to someone who eventually used it to manipulate and blackmail her.

This initial misconduct raised significant concerns about the registrant’s honesty, professional judgment, and understanding of the legal and ethical boundaries that guide pharmacy practice.

Findings
The initial Fitness to Practise Committee in May 2016 found that the registrant’s actions amounted to serious misconduct. Her dishonesty and unauthorized removal of a prescription-only medicine breached fundamental standards expected of pharmacy professionals. While she had no prior issues and was considered a reliable employee, the nature of the conduct necessitated a response that would uphold public trust.
