Case Summary

Allegations

This case concerned the registrant’s handling of private prescriptions while working as a pharmacy manager in a community pharmacy. The registrant had approximately eight years’ experience as a pharmacist at the time of the concerns. The matter arose following complaints from pharmacy colleagues about the way the registrant dealt with private prescriptions involving doctors with whom she had personal connections.

The prescriptions were issued by the registrant’s husband, who was a doctor, and by friends who were also doctors. Rather than receiving and processing prescriptions through a conventional route, the registrant received some prescription requests via text message. In some instances, she wrote out the prescriptions herself and allowed the medicines to be dispensed. This created a significant professional risk because the registrant was not acting with the independence, scrutiny, and patient-centred focus expected of a pharmacist.
