Pharmacist Suspension Extended After POM Theft from Workplace as GPhC Finds Ongoing Risk of Repetition

  • Between July 2024 and August 2024, on a number of occasions, the registrant removed prescription-only medication containing codeine from the pharmacy for their own use or benefit.
  • During August 2024, on a number of occasions, the registrant removed the prescription-only medicine omeprazole from the pharmacy for their own use or benefit.
  • The registrant ordered and/or removed Naramig 2.5 mg tablets from the pharmacy for their own use or benefit.
  • The registrant’s actions were dishonest because: The registrant did not pay for the medication; The registrant knew that they were not entitled to remove the medication.

Outcome: Extended the existing suspension order for a further three months, with a review to take place before the order expires.

This case concerned a pharmacist who repeatedly removed prescription-only medicines from their workplace for personal use or benefit without making payment and while knowing that they were not entitled to take them.

The medicines involved were clinically significant and included medication containing codeine, omeprazole and Naramig 2.5 mg tablets. The codeine-containing medication was removed on a number of occasions between July and August 2024. The registrant admitted this conduct, and the allegation was found proved.
