Pharmacy Technician Struck Off After Smuggling Cocaine, Spice and SIM Cards Into Prison in Prescription Bags

This case concerned a pharmacy technician employed within a prison healthcare setting who was convicted of serious criminal offences involving the introduction of prohibited items into HMP Bristol. The case is particularly significant for pharmacy professionals because the misconduct did not arise from a technical dispensing error or an isolated lapse in clinical competence. Instead, it involved deliberate criminal behaviour, abuse of a privileged professional position, breaches of professional boundaries and conduct that exposed prisoners, prison staff and potentially the wider public to serious harm.

The first allegation arose from the registrant’s conviction on 17 January 2025 for conveying a List B prohibited article into or out of a prison. The determination records that these articles were SIM cards. During a police interview, the registrant admitted taking SIM cards into the prison in return for payment. The sentencing material subsequently established that seven SIM cards had been smuggled into the prison and handed to a prisoner in a prescription bag.
