Pharmacist Suspended for Misconduct in Online Pharmacy Operations

In a recent determination by the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC), a pharmacist was suspended for nine months due to serious misconduct related to the management of an online pharmacy. The pharmacist, who served as the Superintendent Pharmacist at SQ Invest Ltd, faced allegations of failing to implement robust procedures for verifying patient identity and ensuring the safe supply of high-risk medications such as opioids and z-drugs. The GPhC found that the pharmacist’s actions posed a significant risk to patient safety, particularly due to the lack of proper checks and audits in the dispensing process.

The allegations included the failure to ensure that the pharmacy had adequate systems in place to verify patient identities and prevent inappropriate supplies. The pharmacist admitted to not conducting necessary audits and allowing medications to be supplied without completing relevant checks. Furthermore, the pharmacy’s website allowed patients to select medications without a proper consultation, and there were no clear policies on the frequency of supplies for high-risk drugs.

The GPhC’s determination highlighted the pharmacist’s breach of several professional standards, including the failure to provide safe and effective care, demonstrate effective team working, and use professional judgment. The pharmacist’s conduct was deemed to have brought the profession into disrepute and breached fundamental principles of pharmacy practice.

As a result, the pharmacist’s fitness to practise was found to be impaired, and a suspension was deemed necessary to protect the public and uphold confidence in the profession. The GPhC emphasized the importance of pharmacists maintaining rigorous procedures and applying professional judgment, particularly in the context of online pharmacy services.
