Case Summary

Allegations

This case concerned a registered pharmacist who was working in a position of significant professional responsibility as both the Responsible Pharmacist and Superintendent at the pharmacy. The concerns arose from the registrant’s handling of controlled drugs, particularly in relation to emergency supplies and the safe custody, management, storage and disposal of controlled drugs within the pharmacy.

The first allegation was that, in November 2024, the registrant made emergency supplies of controlled drugs to two patients for more than five days’ treatment. This is a clinically and legally significant issue for pharmacists because emergency supplies of controlled drugs are subject to strict restrictions. Controlled drugs carry additional risks because of their potential for misuse, dependence, diversion, overdose and harm. The legal framework governing their supply is designed to protect patients, the public and the integrity of the medicines supply chain.
