Case Summary

Allegations
The case concerns a pharmacist who, while working as a locum in a retail pharmacy in Hereford, was provided with a patient’s contact information in the course of professional duties. Rather than limiting use of this information to clinical communication, the registrant used the details to send professionally inappropriate messages via messaging services. The messages were sent over a period from 21 to 25 December 2024, with additional communications occurring on unspecified dates.

Although the content of the messages was not sexually explicit, they were deemed to have crossed professional boundaries. The communication was unsolicited, personal in nature, and occurred outside of any legitimate healthcare interaction. This behaviour raised significant concerns regarding the registrant’s judgment, understanding of professional conduct, and respect for the patient’s right to privacy.

Findings
The Investigating Committee found that the pharmacist had indeed used patient contact information for non-clinical purposes and had failed to uphold appropriate professional standards. The act was considered a breach of both confidentiality and professional boundaries, and it demonstrated an abuse of the inherent power imbalance that exists between a healthcare professional and a patient.
